California Democrats currently hold 43 of the 52 seats of in the U.S. House of Representatives, with only 9 held by Republicans. Power-hungry politicians want to take those 9 minority seats away from Republicans, so the California is an Authortarian single-party state. Proposition 50 would undermine any chance of future fair elections by ENDING the VOTER APPROVED and the citizen-led Redistricting Commission established by voters in 2008 and 2010 Prop 50 REVERSES previous voter-approved reforms designed to KEEP POLITICS OUT of redistricting. Don't be misled. Despite being labeled the "Election Rigging Response Act," Prop 50 was designed by power-hungry politicians to seize control of congressional map-drawing from the Independent California Citizens Redistricting Commission and return it back to the state legislature. The current Commission was established by voters in 2008 and 2010, and was intended to ensure district lines are drawn by an INDEPENDENT balanced panel of citizens through a transparent process with extensive public input—over 35,000 Californians participated in the last cycle. Prop. 50 dismantles any constitutional safeguards against partisan gerrymandering by eliminating requirements to keep cities, counties, and local communities together, potentially splitting counties 114 times and cities 141 times—far more than the current citizen-drawn maps. This act would dilute the voices of rural communities and communities of color, weakening their representation in Congress. For example, the new maps would merge rural northern California with liberal Marin County, leaving critical rural issues like water rights and agriculture unrepresented. Opponents also emphasize that the proposed map changes are not based on new census data, which is typically used for redistricting every ten years, but are instead a mid-decade political maneuver. Prop 50 is a partisan power grab disguised as a defensive measure against Republican-led redistricting in Texas. "Two wrongs don’t make a right," people, and California should not sacrifice its democratic integrity in retaliation of what happened in Texas. Former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger called Prop. 50 a "big scam." Prop 50 trashes the state constitution and is a power grab taking the power from the people and giving it back to politicians. The special election called to decide Prop. 50 is estimated to cost taxpayers $200 million at a time when California faces a $20 billion budget deficit, leading critics to label it a massive waste of public funds. They also fear that allowing this "temporary" change sets a dangerous precedent, enabling future legislatures to bypass the independent commission whenever politically convenient, thereby permanently ending citizen-led redistricting.
